Pedestrian mowed down in Chappaqua identified
A pedestrian that was fatally struck by a car in Chappaqua Thursday has been identified as a 61-year-old Yonkers man with strong ties to Rockland County.
Gregory Cook was walking down the sidewalk, heading to the Starbucks on King Street, when he was struck. Police say 80-year-old Elaine Schapiro of Chappaqua lost control of her car, jumped a sidewalk and mowed Cook down. Cook?s daughter, a Chappaqua firefighter, responded to the scene to help traumatized victims. She didn?t find out the victim was her father until later.
Cook worked as a gymnastics coach at the Galaxy Gym in Orangeburg. He was remembered at the gym as a kind man who was a mentor to young gymnasts. The Air Force veteran spent days at the gym, encouraging youngsters and giving them life lessons along with gymnastic techniques.
