City officials in Peekskill have big goals to modernize the city following a $10 million check it received from the state for renovations.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo handed the check to the city of Peekskill to renovate its downtown area earlier this month. During a walking tour, Mayor Andre Rainey said improvements will be made to places like the Paramount Theater, the city's historic gazebo and the central parking garage.

The city is also looking to install more bus stops, repaint sidewalks and repair signs.

A priority in the city's facelift is to also find a way to connect its waterfront to the downtown area by using Central Avenue. There are ideas to use elements like sculptures, signs or other designs to make it easier for commuters - especially tourists - to make it from one location to the next.

Peekskill is one of 10 cities to receive big checks from the state this year for renovations.

The mayor says the city is preparing to start renovations by the end of 2019.

This is the fourth time that the city had applied for the eight-figure grant.
