PIERMONT - A local veteran has started a petition to change the name of the new Tappan Zee Bridge so it honors all veterans.

Lawrence Goswick, of Piermont, says he wants the bridge to be renamed the Tappan Zee Veterans Memorial Bridge. He's gathered signatures on a petition and sent out letters in support of his idea, saying there's nothing better than to name it for veterans.

Others have also suggested honoring veterans with the new bridge, including state Sen. Greg Ball (R-40th District), who proposed legislation that would change the name to the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge.

There's also been suggestions to name it for late folk singer Pete Seeger, who dedicated himself to saving the Hudson River from pollution.

The New York State Thruway Authority says there have been no discussions yet about changing the bridge's name.
