A Mercedes SUV slammed into a bicyclist Friday morning.

New Rochelle police say it happened at about 10:45 a.m. Friday at the intersection of North Avenue and Huguenot Street.

The SUV was being driven by a woman.

"We just heard a loud bang, and I looked out the window and the guy was already on the floor," said a witness. "He was literally in the middle of the intersection way past the crosswalk, so he was definitely hit hard. And the women gets out of his car and tries to speak to him but he was already unresponsive."

Police say the victim did not make any statement at the scene, but they may be due to a language barrier. He sustained minor injuries, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be OK.

That driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

"They did a breathalyzer on her, they did some other tests on her, and then she left in an unmarked police car," said the witness.

Police impounded the car and took the bicycle as evidence. The witness says speed very well could've been a factor here.

"I feel like she had enough time to notice him, there were two lanes that he passed while he was riding his bike and then she hit him in the third lane," she said.

Unfortunately, people in the area tell News 12 this very busy intersection is a big accident just waiting to happen.

"As you can see, there's hardly any crosswalks, you know," said Jim O'Toole, who lives in the area. The city doesn't maintain the crosswalks very well. Unfortunately, this was a bicyclist, but something has to be done about this intersection."

The New Rochelle police traffic unit is investigating this incident.
