Police started conducting random searches of bags and backpacks on Metro-North trains Friday.
The increase in security is in light of the recent attacks on London?s mass transit system. Officials say security on Metro-North trains is a top priority and police are not taking any chances. MTA police will also conduct routine inspections of trains. And commuters going to Manhattan should also expect random searches on the subways.
Many commuters said the security increase makes them feel safer. Officials believe this new level of preventative measures will also help commuters stay alert to anything out of the ordinary. Commuters that see any suspicious activity should report it to a police officer or call 1-888-NYC-SAFE.
