Ramapo police are refuting allegations that it took more than an hour to respond to an accident involving a judge who was allegedly drunk.

Ramapo Police Capt. Brad Wiedel says it took 30 minutes for an officer to arrive on scene after Sloatsburg Village Judge Thomas Newman allegedly rear-ended Oscar Padilla and his wife while they were stopped at a red light on Route 17.

Wiedel says the response time was because it was reported to be a minor accident with no injuries and that the cars were off the road. He says Ramapo police were dealing with several emergencies at the time and the call was prioritized.

Newman could now have his driver?s license suspended for refusing to take a Breathalyzer test. He was released without bail and will go before a judge next week.
