Thousands in Hudson Valley are hitting the roads to get to their holiday destinations and police are joining them, hoping to stop drunk drivers and keep travelers safe.

Police are setting up sobriety checkpoints around the area looking for drunk or impaired drivers. In New York State, any driver with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or higher can be charged with driving while intoxicated. Drivers with a BAC less than that can also be arrested for driving while ability impaired.

Many travelers say they will heed the warning and stay home or use a designated driver.
