Police investigating gifts stolen from Salvation Army
The Salvation Army in Newburgh had 60 wrapped gifts stolen on Friday evening that were meant to be given to underprivileged kids.
Police say the building was open at the time of the burglary. They say the receptionist had taken a quick bathroom break, giving the thief time to grab the packages and run.
The Salvation Army says the incident will not stop it from helping as many people as it possibly can. Many people are registered with the Salvation Army to receive donations of food and toys for the holiday season.
Because of the theft, the Salvation Army says it is in need of gifts for children under the age of 13. The gifts can be dropped off at 234 Van Ness St.
The theft comes at a time when the Salvation Army's demand for services has risen, but the collections from the charity's kettles are down from last year.
Police are asking anyone with information about who may have stolen the gifts to contact them at 845-561-3131.
