Police keep eye out for terror, security concerns along NYS Thruway
Truckers heading northbound on the New York State Thruway had no choice but to pull over in Sloatsburg Tuesday. The state Police Hazardous Materials Enforcement team were waiting for them.
All trucks had to pull into the tandem lot, but only those carrying hazardous materials were checked. State police were looking for anything from a broken taillight to possible acts of terrorism. Police say they have a strike force team that goes around the entire state targeting high areas of hazmat traffic. The team knows that trucks carrying large amounts of gasoline and other materials can be used as lethal weapons and in a post-September 11th world, so checking who is behind the wheel is also part of the search.
Police checked about 460 trucks an hour during the crackdown.
