YONKERS - Police say the killing of dozens of cats that were found in bags hanging from tree limbs in Yonkers may have been going on for a year.

The cats, some apparently bludgeoned to death, were found in a small square of woods tucked in between homes on Overland Terrace. City sanitation worker Brett Pisano says he came across a similar scene at the same spot one year ago. Pisano says the odd find was so small in scale that the crew didn't call authorities.

Bits of bone were scattered in the area, and a baseball bat, shovels and a metal pipe were found nearby.

Ernest Longaro, of the Westchester SPCA, says leads on the disturbing case are rolling in. He says because it all played out in the backyard of some Yonkers residents, he's confident whoever is behind the cat killings will be caught.

Police say the person responsible for this act of animal cruelty will face criminal prosecution.
