Police probe possible connection between two violent street crimes in Rockland
Police arrested a Haverstraw teen Tuesday accused of slashing a man across the face.
According to police, 16-year-old Richard Estrella came up from behind a 29-year-old man inside the Paradise Café bar and cut the victim from the corner of his mouth to behind his head with a box cutter. The man was also beaten by a group outside the bar after the attack. He was taken to Nyack Hospital for surgery to repair a 12-inch gash. The victim later identified Estrella from surveillance video from the bar. Police suspect the slashing was a case of drug violence, but are trying to find out why a 16-year-old was in the bar.
Two days later, a man was shot in the leg in Spring Valley. Police believe the shooting may have been in retaliation for the slashing. No arrests have been made in that incident.
