Officers are working to determine how a boat turned up mysteriously in the middle of a road Thursday night in Ramapo.
Police say they got calls about the 19-foot cruiser around 9 p.m. Thursday on West Eckerson Road in the Hillcrest section of town.
The boat appeared to be abandoned and posed a safety hazard, so officials put it on a trailer to take it off the street. It now sits at Jan's Med A Car, where no one has claimed it.
Police say the boat could have fallen onto the street accidentally, but they aren't sure.
"We do have some officers that are going to be reviewing some surveillance video from the area and try and talk to some neighbors to see if they saw or heard of anything last night, because you know, the boat doesn't just magically appear there," says Sgt. Andres Sanchez, of the Ramapo Police Department.
If officers reach the current owner of the boat and find that they left it on purpose, they could face charges.
One of the workers at Jan's says that they were the only place that would take the cruiser because moving it is so expensive. It cost almost $1,000 to get the boat to the yard, and could take $1,000 more to get rid of it.
Anyone with information about the boat is asked to call police at 845-357-2400.
