Police: Speed caused fatal Village of Florida crash
Police say excessive speed played a role in a fatal Mother's Day accident that took the lives of a young couple in the Village of Florida.
Brittany Smith, 16, and her 26-year-old boyfriend, Joseph Roman, crashed into a telephone pole at Wheeler and Highland roads.
The speed limit at that stretch of the road is 30 mph, but neighbors say that sign is often ignored. Police say Smith and Roman were doing 62 mph when they crashed.
"It's really bad over here," says Beth Eriksson, of Warwick. "People just fly at night."
With few lights and just one stop sign, local residents say officials need to do more than patrol the notorious road.
