Police targeting motorists in bus safety crackdown
Police across the state are out in full force this morning to target motorists who fail to stop for school buses flashing their red stop lights.
The initiative, called Operation Safe Stop, is an attempt by law enforcement to maintain the safety of children getting on and off buses. Too many people ignore the flashing stop signs attached to school buses, officials say.
Also, police are taking a closer look at bus safety in the Hudson Valley after a fatal tour bus accident on the Bronx-Westchester border.
More than 10 vans and tour buses were inspected yesterday at Woodbury Commons in Orange County, where five vehicles were deemed "not safe enough" for the roads. Several drivers were also cited for having improper licenses and insurance.
