Police: Woman who died in car wreck fell asleep
The New Windsor community is mourning a young woman who police say fell asleep at the wheel, leading to a three-car wreck Sunday that took her life.
Police believe Jessica Morales, 20, fell asleep around 4:30 a.m. as she drove home on Route 32 in Cornwall from a friend's house. Police say Morales' Honda crossed into oncoming traffic, first clipping an SUV in the rear wheel. The driver of that vehicle was not hurt. According to police, Morales' car then struck a vehicle head-on.That driver, 34-year-old John Alexander, is in critical condition at Westchester County Medical Center. But doctors say his injuries are not life-threatening.
Morales died as a result of the crash.
Neighbors remember Morales as a caring woman who organized a clothing drive for victims of the deadly Peru earthquake.
As police investigated, they discovered the drivers involved in the three-car collision all lived in the Butter Hill Estates development, but they did not know each other.
