A Pomona animal shelter is fighting to free a dog that is being kept in a cage after scratching an animal control officer.
Niko, accused of being a dangerous dog, has been caged for several weeks at Hi-Tor Animal Shelter. He's only allowed out when the shelter is closed.
The Ramapo town attorney's office says Clarkstown animal control officer Pat Coleman was attacked by Niko last month at the shelter.
Ramapo officials say if a dog is declared dangerous, it could have to be constantly on a leash or muzzled, permanently in a pen, or even euthanized. Niko, however, isn't facing euthanasia.
Niko's case is scheduled for a hearing Friday.
