The Popolopen Bridge along Route 9W is finally back open.
The New York Department of Transportation says the bridge in Highland Falls outside of Bear Mountain State Park reopened Friday afternoon.
It had been closed for weeks from last month’s damaging floods. State officials say rain caused a 20-foot-deep mass of soil to wash down the southern slope, which supports the bridge.
Engineers designed and constructed a new support system for the bridge in just a few weeks.
The solution was a “geosynthetic reinforced fill-type retaining wall system,” according to officials. They say it’s a type of reinforced soil wall that strengthens the soil and holds it in place.
The reopening should significantly improve traffic and convenience navigating the area.
