Probation department cleared of wrongdoing in deadly New Windsor factory shooting
An investigation clears the Orange County Probation Department of any wrongdoing in a deadly shooting rampage at a New Windsor cosmetics factory in September.
An Orange County Critical Review report places all the blame on the gunman, 55-year-old Victor Piazza, who shot three of his former co-workers at Verla International before turning the gun on himself. The report concluded the county probation department went by the book in the series of events that occurred leading up to the shootings of the company?s co-owners Mario Maffei and Robert Roth and office manager Joanne O?Brien. O?Brien died from her injuries a few days after the shooting.
The probation department conducted a visit to Piazza, a convicted sex offender, days before the shooting. While Piazza was found in possession of alcoholic beverages and pornographic material he was not arrested. The report found it was the right decision because there was no obvious sign of alcohol use and no violence in his background.
