Ramapo town officials are striving to develop a plan that could accommodate every police officer?s request to have days off for religious holidays.

The Ramapo PBA says the issue of holiday schedules was brought to the attention of the Ramapo administrators when Officer Baile Glauber was allowed to take days off for two religious holidays after only two weeks on the job.

Usually, such requests have to be submitted a year in advance and are based on seniority.

?They entered into an illegal negotiation with Officer Baile, gave her a special deal outside of our contract, and again now she's being allowed to work with a benefit that no one else in this department is entitled to,? says Ramapo PBA President Dennis Proctor.

Proctor points to the fact that the 10-year veteran Officer Ernest Tenemille, a practicing Seventh Day Adventist, submitted a similar request but received no response from officials.

?The PBA is very concerned that special treatment is being given to one and not [the] other,? Proctor says.

Town Supervisor Chris St. Lawrence says a new plan could make it fair to all officers on the force, but if they are unable to use compensated days off, they may be able to take it without pay.

PBA officials, however, believe this proposal will violate their contract.
