Rep. Nita Lowey calls for end to anti-Semitic actions in Ukraine

YONKERS - Hudson Valley lawmakers are among the many who want to put an end to anti-Semitic sentiments in Ukraine.

Fliers were handed out by masked man on Tuesday to Jewish worshippers in front of a synagogue in the city of Donetsk during Passover. Some are interpreting this as a possible attempt by radical groups to stir up anti-Semitic fear to justify further violence.

Jewish citizens are reportedly being ordered to "register" with pro-Russian militants. The fliers warn Jews to document their property or face deportation.

Rep. Nita Lowey, who is the current ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, is calling these actions unacceptable. Secretary of State John Kerry says no form of religious hate should be tolerated.

Jewish leaders in Ukraine are dismissing the fliers as a provocation. They say relations with their neighbors are amicable, and the self-proclaimed head of the "People's Republic" is denying any connection.

Lowey says that doesn't mean the fliers should be dismissed. She is also calling for an international investigation to determine who is responsible.
