Republicans designate Pirro as attorney general, Spencer for senator
The state GOP Convention got underway on Long Island Wednesday and first on the agenda was the nomination of former Westchester District Attorney Jeanine Pirro for state attorney general. The party also designated former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer to take on Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY).
Pirro is the only Republican seeking to replace Eliot Spitzer, who is running for governor. Pirro accepted the party?s nomination and told delegates she was the first woman judge and district attorney in Westchester, and intends to be the first woman attorney general for New York state.
Spencer got the party?s nomination over K.T. McFarland, however, the two will still square off in a primary in September. McFarland, a former Pentagon aide, has been ahead in the polls against Spencer, so analysts say they are expecting a hard fought primary.
