Residents will vote Wednesday on a special referendum for construction of a nearly $4 million pool complex at the Jesse J. Kaplan School in West Nyack.

The school, part of Rockland BOCES, serves students with learning disabilities and other special physical and medical needs.

BOCES school officials say the pool would provide water therapy to the special-needs students.

"If you're a parent of one of our children who have severe physical limitations, this pool is gonna help us teach them to require less support, to stand, to sit, to transfer themselves out of their wheelchairs,” says Kaplan School principal Gianluca Dimuccio.

School authorities say that the current pool is more than 40 years old and well past its prime. They say that for the past several years, the county school board has been saving the money in a capital improvement fund, eliminating any additional cost to taxpayers. According to state law, voters still must approve the measure.
