Residents voice concerns over new slaughterhouse proposed by Adir Poultry in New Square
YONKERS - Residents in a Rockland County village are voicing their dissatisfaction over a proposal that would create a kosher slaughterhouse.
Adir Poultry wants to construct a 26,000 square-foot plant in New Square that would process up to 5,000 chickens a day, logging 21-hour days Sunday through Thursday.
The village has yet to schedule a public hearing on the plan, but residents are already speaking out against the proposal. They say they are worried about the impact the slaughterhouse would have on the area, including odors that the plant could produce.
Adir Poultry used to run a smaller plant in New Square, but it was shut down in 2010 after operators discovered uninspected poultry was being sold.
