Rockland Co. leaders ask lawmakers to roll back cuts
Representatives of Hudson Valley school districts, nonprofit organizations and health care providers met with lawmakers Thursday, pleading with them to reconsider the drastic cuts under the proposed state budget.
?My hope is that you will be able to continue to help, to be able to continue to help North Rockland,? says North Rockland schools Superintendent Brian Monahan.
School superintendents, whose districts are facing multimillion-dollar shortfalls, presented their cases to legislators, asking them to relate to Gov. David Paterson what effects the proposed cuts will have on their schools. The East Ramapo PTA president says her district could lose two schools, along with $3.6 million.
Attendees of the meeting also discussed the possibility that local taxpayers could be forced to shell out more to house inmates at the Rockland County Jail.
?New York State government pays Rockland to house these inmates at the rate of $20 day,? says David Fried, of the Rockland County Sheriff?s Department. ?This is remarkably problematic when you consider the cost of housing these inmates is $240 dollars per day.?
