Rockland congressman demands Wal-Mart carry emergency contraception
Democratic Congressman Eliot Engel, who represents parts of Rockland, Westchester and the Bronx is demanding that Wal-Mart start carrying emergency contraception statewide.
New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer announced Tuesday he would support the signing of a bill that would allow pharmacists to distribute the emergency contraceptive without a doctor's prescription. However, many pharmacies are refusing to carry the FDA approved medication called Plan B even with a prescription.
Engel says the Plan B pill should be made more easily available to women to give them more options. In a letter to the Wal-Mart president, Engel says women are greatly at risk when stores, like Wal-Mart, choose not to stock the pill.
