WEST NYACK - The Rockland County Department of Health has identified a case of measles in the area.

Officials say that residents may have been exposed to a child with measles at the Palisades Center Mall on Feb. 2 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Specific stores that may have been exposed include Best Buy and the AT&T store, located on the first floor of the mall.

Residents are asked to call their doctors immediately if they were exposed to these areas and are pregnant, under 6 months old, have compromised immune systems or have not been vaccinated against the measles.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus and is spread by contact with nasal or throat secretions of infected people.

Some symptoms to look out for are runny nose, watery eyes, high fever and rash. Officials say complications from measles can result in pneumonia, encephalitis and, in rare cases, death.

The infected child is said to be improving and is no longer running a fever.
