Officials in Rockland County are fighting to prevent hurricane charity fraud.
Dozens of organizations are asking for your help and your cash in the relief effort for the Gulf Coast. Many of them allow you to log on and donate, others require a call, but officials say not every organization has the victims of the disaster in mind. The Consumer Affairs Department says telephone solicitations are very common and if you are unfamiliar with the organization, ask them to send you something in writing.
Rockland County is in the process of setting up a donation site at the county executives office. All those donations are being given to the Red Cross.
Officials are warning people to do their research before opening their wallets.
