A bill banning a potentially harmful chemical used in making plastic bottles is awaiting the Rockland County executive?s signature.

The Legislature unanimously passed the bill, which prohibits products containing Bisphenol A (BPA) from being sold in the county. BPA is often found in items such as baby bottles, sippy cups and teething rings and makes plastic shatter resistant.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says the six major U.S. manufacturers of baby bottles don?t use BPA. Those bottles make up about 90 percent of the U.S. market.

The ban would mean stores selling baby products with BPA could be fined.
