Rockland County opened its first drug and alcohol recovery center Tuesday – one of about 20 available in the state.

The Foundations Recovery Community Center, which was built with money from the state, includes a community room, a business center and access to recovery coaches who help people find work, build new skills and enjoy life again without drugs or alcohol.

Lieutenant Gov. Kathy Hochul says the new center is a step in the right direction.

“We need to continue to have accessible places where people can pull up in the privacy of this back parking lot and open that door and enter a whole new world of people who understand what they're going through,” she says.

The center will soon offer yoga, meditation, martial arts and other activities that officials say are fundamental to recovery. It’s located at 25 Smith St., Suite 108.

Opioid-related deaths increased 60% in the Rockland area from 2013 to 2016.
