Rockland paramedic honored for saving 2 lives
A Rockland paramedic honored for saving two lives gave credit to a product used on the battlefields of Iraq. Rockland paramedics had received permission to test a hemorrhage control pad called QuikClot, which is a type of gauze filled with a material that dries up blood.
In May 2007, Bardonia resident Deborah Dillts suffered a serious leg injury after a motorcycle crash on Route 304 in Pearl River. Rockland paramedic John McCullough was one of the first on the scene and used QuikClot. In January, McCullough used QuikClot again on Route 9W in Palisades after a Bergen County, N.J. police officer lost part of his leg in another motorcycle crash.
On Monday, McCullough was presented with an award for his work with QuikClot. The woman whose life he saved on Route 304 handed over the plaque for his heroism.
Due to the success of the QuikClot, it is now standard on all paramedic units and ambulances throughout Hudson Valley. QuikClot
