Rockland teacher resigns amid cheating allegations
A Chestnut Ridge third-grade teacher resigned amid allegations she helped her class cheat on a state-required math test last month.
The New York Education Department confirms it is investigating whether a Fleetwood Elementary School teacher gave third-grade students the answers to the test. East Ramapo Board of Education President Nathan Rothschild says he and others alerted the state immediately upon hearing the allegations. They also pushed for the teacher to resign.
The state education department could rule the entire test invalid for the class. That would give the district a failing grade since the tests are used to measure progress and fine tune curriculums and teaching under the state Board of Regents' efforts to raise academic standards. It could then lead to other repercussions, such as less state funding.
There is no word on whether other school staff members are also accused in the cheating scandal.
