Rockland unveils Web site to track pedophiles
Rockland County officials unveiled a new Web site Wednesday designed to track sex offenders and better protect children from predators.
County Executive Scott Vanderhoef, along with law enforcement representatives from every branch in Rockland, said the county is now safer, thanks to the Web site.
"Every citizen, every grandparent, every mom and dad will have an opportunity now to join in a very easy, very recognizable quick way to gain information that may, in fact, save their children," said Rockland County Sheriff James Kralik.
The Web site allows someone to type in an address, such as their home or their child's school. A map appears showing users where level two and level three sex offenders live within a mile of the location. The offender's picture is also included.
There are 106 registered sex offenders in Rockland County. They are required to register their addresses every 90 days.
The Web site also allows users to sign up for e-mail alerts when offenders move into an area.
