One of eight Rutgers football players accused in a credit card fraud scheme appeared before a judge Thursday.

Brendan DeVera pleaded not guilty.

DeVera was known for his high school athleticism. But he has now been kicked off the Rutgers team.

Prosecutors say that the eight men took stolen credit card information off of the “dark web,” but would not elaborate if the players hacked the information for themselves or if the stolen information was for sale. The players allegedly took the stolen information and moved money to Rutgers student accounts.

“Some of the students who got the money put it on to their credit cards and would go to such places as a book store at the college and they would purchase such things as gift cards, which is a red flag to law enforcement with people doing something like that,” says Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey.

Carey says that about $11,000 was stolen. He says that the amount could increase if the fraud case reaches other schools.

DeVera is due back in court in October. The other players have not made a court appearance yet.
