All salons and personal care businesses were ordered to close down indefinitely over the weekend, and a local salon owner turned to Tara looking to help out her workers

Springtime is typically the busiest time of the year over at the Totally Hott Salon in Rye Brook, but now there are empty chairs.

The drastic order was meant to help contain the coronavirus but is already having devastating consequences on the personal care industry.

Owner Lia Hakim was forced to fire 36 of her 37 employees.

Her most urgent concern is making sure they all have a salon to come back to when the virus stops spreading.

So Hakim got creative. She’s now selling Hott at Home root touch-up kits.

“You get a package with your specially developed formula. It comes with a bowl and applicator,” she says. “Then comes a virtual call with your stylist to walk you through the thing.”

Hakim pleaded with News 12 to help her spread the word. She says she hopes to send most of the proceeds to her laid-off staff.

“Everyone is in the same boat - we have to work together. I'm going to cry. What else can we do?” she asks.
