Schumer calls for CSX changes
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer says he is on a mission to improve train safety, and today he brought that message to his home state.
Schumer joined Rockland County Executive Ed Day near the train tracks on New Main Street in Haverstraw, which was the site of last week’s CSX train collision with a commercial truck carrying cars.
Schumer says he is asking the Department of Transportation to implement new requirements to stabilize oil prior to shipping it through the county and state.
Although the specific CSX train involved in last week's accident wasn't carrying crude oil, Schumer says dangerous crude oil shouldn't be shipped without being stabilized because it could  lead to potentially violent explosions.
"When it comes to something as serious as the derailment of trains with oil, you have to take an all above approach," says Schumer.
