The U.S. Senate Committee on Ethics has severely admonished Sen. Bob Menendez for receiving gifts from a Florida doctor, who is one of the senator’s friends.
A litter from the Committee to the Democrat stated that he repeatedly accepted gifts of significant value from Dr. Salomon Melgen without Committee approval. These gifts included rides on Melgen’s private jet and vacations.
The Committee says that Menendez violated Senate rules and federal law by accepting the gifts and they are requiring him to repay fair market value of all impermissible gifts.
Menendez was put on trial last year for corruption and bribery charges. The case ended in a mistrial when the jury failed to come to a unanimous decision. The Justice Department dropped all the charges against Menendez in January.
The senator has not commented on the letter from the Ethics Committee.
