An 18-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff?s Department has been charged with allegedly working a second job while out on workers? compensation for a back injury.
Deputy Audrey Rodrigues turned herself in to the sheriff's office Friday and was charged with first-degree perjury and making a false statement on an insurance application, both felonies, officials said.
Rodrigues, 40, has been out of work and collecting full pay since she claimed she hurt her back on the job in June 2006, officials said. Since that time, officials said she has collected $75,000 in workers? compensation benefits.
The sheriff's office, in conjunction with the state Workers Compensation Board, the state Insurance Fraud Bureau and Orange County District Attorney?s Office looked into Rodrigues' case. According to their investigation, Rodrigues had been working at a real estate business during the time she was sidelined with the injury.
Rodrigues was arraigned in the Town of New Windsor and posted $1,000 bail. She may face more charges stemming from the case.
