MOUNT VERNON - Gunfire erupted on the streets of Mount Vernon last night, but no one was hit by the bullets.

Police say shots rang out just after 11:30 p.m. on Putnam Street. Investigators say they received numerous calls about the gunfire and they were also alerted by the city's computerized gunshot detection system, known as “Shotspotter.” The software sends signals to police headquarters when shots are fired.

Police closed off the area between North Seventh Avenue and North High Street, and detectives could be seen collecting evidence and shell casings from the ground. The Westchester County police helicopter was also called in to search for the suspect from the sky as cops canvassed the area below.

News 12 has learned that two men in the area told police that they were the intended targets. Detectives say no arrests have been made yet because the witnesses were unable to give a description of the shooter.
