NEWBURGH - A soldier from the Hudson Valley received a somber homecoming in Newburgh today as his body was escorted from Stewart International Airport with full military honors.

Nine state police cruisers led the silent procession for 24-year-old Army Sgt. Shawn Farrell along Route 747 Wednesday morning. The procession included two motorcades, Ulster County sheriff's deputies, firefighters and loved ones including Farrell's family.

The highly decorated soldier, who graduated from Rondout High School in 2008, was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan last month when he was killed during an enemy attack on his unit.

Sgt. Farrell's body was taken upstate to Accord for a private visitation. A public visitation and a burial service will be held tomorrow.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus ordered that flags at all county buildings be flown at half-staff in honor of Farrell.
