Residents of Sleepy Hollow came together Friday to honor the first serviceman to die in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Sixty-six years ago, Japanese fighter jets attacked Pearl Harbor, thrusting the U.S. into World War II. The attack feels like it took place yesterday for Armando Galella. His friend, Jonathon Horan, from Sleepy Hollow, was the first serviceman killed that day and the first from Westchester to die in World War II.

?Private Jonathon Horan ran to the airfield to grab a .30-caliber machine gun to fire when he was gunned down,? remembered Galella tearfully.

A park at the end of Beekman Avenue was rededicated in Horan?s honor. The Sleepy Hollow High School band and choir added to the ceremony.

Horan?s nephew, who grew up hearing the story of his uncle, hopes young people will understand what really happened. Those in attendance hope people will enjoy the tranquil setting of the park, but also remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
