Sources tell News 12 there are signs that the federal government is taking action in the wake of a News 12 investigation that revealed a veteran's corpse was left to rot for months at the VA in Montrose.

Korean War veteran Santos Colon, of Newburgh, died back on Nov. 2, but sources say his body was left at the morgue when no one showed up to claim his body.

Multiple sources say that the inspector general for the VA in Washington, D.C. is now investigating.

News 12 was told that there were as many as five investigators on the campus of Montrose from Washington, D.C. to begin a formal inquiry.

VA officials did own up to what happened, calling the incident “isolated” and the result of a performance issue that has already led to new policies and protocols.

News 12’s calls to the inspector general have not yet been returned.
