Sources say an NYPD detective killed himself at Billy Joe's Ribworks in Newburgh Saturday night -- but somehow his body went undetected until the next day.
Billy Joe's is a popular waterfront night spot that hosts live music and packed crowds every weekend -- as was the case this weekend when sources say Detective Nicholas Budney shot himself in the head there. A police source tells News 12 that a worker found his body on the back deck the next day.
A restaurant manager refused to comment Wednesday and asked News 12 to leave.
The 36-year-old law enforcement officer was from Rock Tavern. According to his online obituary, he had served in the NYPD for 13 years as part of the 47th Precinct's Emergency Service Unit in the Bronx. He was named "Cop of the Year" four times.
He was also a member of the North Highland Fire Department, where he had recently been named "Fireman of the Year."
An NYPD spokesperson referred News 12 questions to local police, who confirmed the incident but not the victim's name.
