Spitzer ditches illegal immigrant driver's license plan
Due to overwhelming opposition, Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) abandoned his proposal to allow undocumented New Yorkers to get a driver?s license.
Spitzer says he still supports the reasoning behind the plan, which was a way to bring some of the 1 million illegal aliens into a tracking system through a driver's license. He says the goal of the proposal was increased security, safer roads and the opportunity to bring illegal immigrants ?out of the shadows.?
Opponents contended the plan would make it easier for possible terrorists to get identification and ultimately make the country less safe.
However, the governor admits the controversial proposal would never win approval. ?Leadership is not solely about doing what one thinks is right. Leadership is also about listening to the public, responding to their concerns and knowing when to put aside a single divisive issue in favor of a larger agenda,? Spitzer said.
Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) agreed with Spitzer that the president and Congress need to find a solution. ?We need tough, we need fair, we need practical immigration reform and we have to work together in a bipartisan way,? Lowey said.
