Officials at the Spring Valley nursing facility where a deadly fire broke out overnight released a statement Tuesday afternoon thanking staff and other responders for their efforts.

The statement said, "Our staff was truly heroic in evacuating residents who were inside the building as the fire spread, and we are forever grateful to the first responders whose actions undoubtedly saved lives."

It went on to say, "All 112 residents at Evergreen Court Home are accounted for and have been placed in a new home. We are currently in the process of contacting their families. Anyone who wishes to reach us to inquire about a family member can call 973-378-1997."

At least one resident of the facility has died as a result of the fire. When crews arrived the building, it was engulfed and rescuers had to go door to door to evacuate residents.

At least 10 people were transported to the hospital with injuries, while the rest were sent to three nearby nursing homes.

The entire experience described by witnesses as frightening and tragic.

News 12 has learned that in emergencies like these, the facilities will provide housing for residents until they have somewhere else to go or the facility is rebuilt.
