Spring Valley trustee accused of harassment
A harassment complaint was filed Wednesday against a Spring Valley village trustee after an alleged heated argument with a neighbor over garbage disposal.
According to Spring Valley Mayor George Darden, Village Trustee Anthony Leon observed his neighbor, who is new to the area, putting out garbage on South Madison Avenue when it was not a pickup day.
"The person, from what I understand, kind of ignored him and went on to put the garbage out anyway, " Darden says. "Trustee Leon was adamant about it, said, 'no, you can't put it out today.'"
Words were exchanged between the two people, and the argument escalated. Leon called police saying the neighbor was violating village code.
Darden says it could have been a misunderstanding because of a possible language barrier on the part of the neighbor, but police say there was no miscommunication since the woman spoke English.
The officers who arrived on the scene helped the woman take her garbage off the street until pickup day. They say an officer attempted to calm Leon down, but the trustee pushed his hand away several times.
A few hours after the incident, police say, Leon's neighbor went to the Spring Valley Police Department and filed a harassment complaint against the village trustee.
"He did make an apology after he found out the lady was not a resident for a long time," Darden says. "And I think that's what should have been done."
Leon was not immediately available for comment. Attempts made by News 12 Hudson Valley to track down the neighbor were unsuccessful.
