Stock swindler's girlfriend appears in court
The girlfriend of Armonk stock swindler Sam Israel pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges stemming from her alleged attempt to smuggle money to her incarcerated boyfriend.
Debra Ryan is accused of stuffing $300 into a magazine and mailing it to Israel, who is currently locked up at the Westchester County Jail after allegedly trying to fake his suicide last June.
Ryan, 45, agreed to waive her right to a grand jury, and prosecutors said they were in active plea negotiations. Ryan is already facing federal charges for participating in Israel?s suicide plot.
In the meantime, Ryan has been barred by a federal judge from having any contact with her boyfriend.
Ryan is due back in federal court Feb. 10 on the aiding and abetting charge. She is also scheduled to face the judge in Mount Pleasant Feb. 26 on the smuggling charge.
