Heavy rains and strong winds took down trees and power lines Friday morning, leaving more than 9,000 people in Rockland and Orange counties in the dark.
"My daughter?s on life support equipment, and we lost power last night around 9 o'clock," says Linda Ropiecki, of Central Valley, one of the areas hardest hit by the power outage.
Ropiecki says although she has a backup generator, having no electricity could be potentially life-threatening to her daughter.
The town of Woodbury was under a state of emergency. Downed wires and tree branches caused roads to be shut down, making it difficult for some residents to return home.
In Highland Mills, the strong wind ripped out a utility pole from the ground, downing power lines and leaving people without electricity and heat.
Residents without power can find refuge at an overnight shelter at Monroe-Woodbury H.S. The shelter will remain open until the power is restored.
