Congresswoman Sue Kelly (R-Katonah) says she has a commitment from the Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to hold a summit meeting concerning safety issues at Indian Point nuclear power plant.

Concern about the plant has heightened in recent weeks because of radioactive contamination of ground water and recurring problems with the emergency siren system. Kelly hopes the summit meeting will bring all of the stakeholders together to start talking about whether an evacuation plan will work.

There is also a growing concern from local representatives in Washington. They are calling for an independent review of operations and security at Indian Point. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has agreed to an independent review. Entergy spokesman Jim Steets says he hopes the summit will produce good information and that the review will clarify for the public that Indian Point is safe.
