Hazmat scare at Stewart Air National Guard in Newburgh

Posted: Updated:

Hazmat teams were called to the Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh Wednesday because of a chemical scare.

Officials say a mechanical crew discovered an unknown powdery substance inside a C-5 passenger and cargo plane that had just returned from a mission to Germany. The chemical covered about 30 square feet of the aircraft and was found in the cargo area. The material was determined to be a motor vehicle decontamination chemical and was quickly contained with no contamination and no injuries, according to a base spokesman.

Although flights at the base were affected by the investigation, there were no problems or delays for flights coming into and out of nearby Stewart International Airport.
