Officials at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan tested all of the 156 emergency sirens around Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange counties Wednesday.

The siren tests were part of a regularly scheduled test of the warning system in the 10-mile zone surrounding the plant. The latest tests come as Entergy, owner of Indian Point, has announced that new sirens will be installed. The new system will have back up batteries and can be set off by radio, telephone or cell phones.

In the past, officials in the four surrounding counties have interpreted the data differently when the sirens were tested. Entergy officials hope the new sirens will resolve any questions about the reliability of the emergency warning system. They say they plan to have the new sirens up and running by November.
